Key takeaways:

•

About B Corp

Patagonia was the first California company to sign up for B certification, joining over 500 certified B Corporations in 60 different industries. “Patagonia is trying to build a company that could last 100 years,” said founder Yvon Chouinard on the day Patagonia signed up in January 2012. “Benefit corporation legislation creates the legal framework to enable mission-driven companies like Patagonia to stay mission-driven through succession, capital raises, and even changes in ownership, by institutionalizing the values, culture, processes, and high standards put in place by founding entrepreneurs.”

About 1% for the Planet

1% for the Planet all started when two businessmen -- Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies -- met and bonded over their shared love for the outdoors. Realizing their responsibility to protect our planet, they decided to give 1% of their sales back to the environment—whether or not they were profitable. 1% for the Planet was officially launched in 2002 and is now a global organization that exists to ensure our planet and future generations thrive. They inspire businesses and individuals to support Environmental Partners through membership and everyday actions. Yvon Chouinard writes in his book, Let My People Go Surfing, "The intent of 1% for the Planet is to help fund these diverse environmental organizations so that collectively they can be a more powerful source in solving the world’s problems.”
